The regional Black members’ AGM takes place at the UNISON South West regional office in Exeter (UNISON House, Emperor Way, Exeter Business Park, Exeter, EX1 3QS) on Saturday 11 November 2023 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided. After lunch, the new committee will hold their first meeting which will run from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Please note that there are two parts to this event (plus lunch):

  • 10.30-12.30 annual general meeting
  • 12.30-13.30 lunch
  • 13.30-15.30 first meeting of new committee

All delegates to the AGM must be Black members of UNISON as defined here and must be full members of UNISON. The formula for allocating places to branches is the same as that which applies to regional council (see attached document for your branch’s entitlement).

The deadline for registering delegates is 12 noon, Wednesday 25 October 2023.

South West regional Black members’ committee nominations

Branches are invited to nominate Black members for places on the South West region Black members’ committee from the service groups(s) they organise in (i.e. health branches can nominate Black members for the health service group in each of the following seats: 1 x woman, 1 x low pay (currently £11.80 per hour), and 1 x general. Multi service group branches can nominate from each service group within which they organise. Branches must consult with branch self-organised groups (where they exist) regarding the nominations.

The deadline for nominations is 12 noon, Monday 12 December 2022.

Election of South West region Black members’ committee chair and vice chair / co-vice chairs (2)

The election for the Black members committee chair and vice chair / co-vice chair will take place at the AGM immediately following the committee election. Only members of the South West region Black members’ committee can be nominated to stand for the position of chair and vice chair / co-vice chair.

For your information, paragraph 9 of the South West region Black members’ committee constitution states the following:


  1. The regional Black members’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) will elect members on the committee to the following posts: –


  1. Chair

The role of the Chair shall be to:


  1. chair the regional Black members’ committee (RBMC)
  2. ensure that all items of business are dealt with within the time allocated
  3. liaise with the region on all matters related to RBMC business and regional UNISON policy
  4. attend meetings as required with the union on matters related to Black members within the South West region
  5. take action in consultation with the vice chair/co-vice chairs on issues which cannot wait until the committee meeting.  All decisions to be reported to the full committee
  6. work collectively with the appointed secretary to the RBMC and agree all items in relation to the committee


  1. Vice Chair / Co-Vice Chair(s) (2)

The role of the Chair shall be to:


  1. substitute for the chair where necessary
  2. assist in carrying out the functions of the chair as above



The venue is fully accessible, including a lift. Members can let us know of any reasonable adjustments that you require, in order for them to participate in this event.



Members are encouraged to let us know in the registration form if they need childcare in order for them to participate in this event.

Dietary needs

As lunch will be provided, please give details of any dietary needs below.



This is a one-day event, so no accommodation will be booked centrally. If members require accommodation due to the distances they need to travel, they are encouraged to contact their branch and arrange through you.

Members should contact the branch to arrange their travel. The venue is near junction 29 of the M5 but parking is limited at present due to scaffolding works. There is a bus from Exeter St David’s train station. Postcode: EX1 3QS. There is a guide attached on how to get to the Exeter regional office.


Tea / coffee, and lunch will be provided. We will endeavour to cater for any dietary requirements if they let us know in the registration form.
